Bright, Bold and Beautiful - 2023 Colour of the Year
Some of you may know this, some of you may not know this – but every year the Pantone Colour Institute choose a colour to be the Pantone Colour for the year. And for 2023 this colour is – Viva Magenta.
So who is the Pantone Colour Institute?
Pantone Colour Institute is the business unit within Pantone that highlights the top seasonal runway colours, selects the Pantone Colour of the Year, forecasts global colour trends, and advises companies on colour for product and brand visual identity. THEY KNOW…….
Now that we have that covered, let’s talk Viva Magenta.
“It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative. This year’s Color of the Year is powerful and empowering.” – pantone.com
Now it took me a while to find an item which is best to relate this colour to – and I am pretty sure that Pantone will not appreciate my simplification of the colour (especially since they gave it such a beautiful name) but when I look at the colour I seem to relate it back to raw beetroot…..
Now that we have something to relate the colour to – let’s talk about how to wear it in 2023…..
1. Muted and pastel colours.
Wear your Viva Magenta with a soft pastel colour like a light lilac or combine it with a beige or muted grey.
2. Go for your darker jewel tones.
This colour is definitely a jewel tone and as such, is beautifully paired with any other rich colours such as emerald or peacock green. You can even opt for a colour as strong as graphite.
A beautiful example of how this colour combination would work is to combine it with Hydro Blue.

3. Keep the colour grounded with brown...
....and other earthy colours. For this colour combination, think wine red or almond brown, or even a beautiful cider colour.

4. Stay within the family of colour.
A trending look is to stick to monochrome outfits (that is the same colour from head to toe) but another version of this is to mix and match between the family of the vivid magenta.
Styling this look would look something like this:
5. Spice it up with mustard.
This colour combination is an extension of the earthy feel but instead of blending in with the magenta as is the case of the browns, the mustard POPS.
While we do not have a lot of Vivid Magenta items online - we have a host of mustard and yellow bags and accessories which will offer you this colour combination beautifully
